Historical Note

The primary mission of the Provost's Office is to secure the vitality of the University's academic life, to foster the intellectual well-being of students, staff and faculty, and to marshal and allocate resources in support of academic excellence, and in doing so, to serve as an educational asset for the benefit of the state and the nation.

When the University of Texas opened in 1883, there was no provost. Beginning in 1899, however, a chief academic officer was appointed as second in command to the president. The title “provost” first appeared in 1957 when Harry Huntt Ransom was appointed as vice president and provost. The position went through numerous incarnations, finally becoming the Office of the Executive Vice President and Provost in 1985.
