Reverend Joseph Barton and his wife Albina
Mikulencak Barton, along with their son Reverend Josef A. Barton and his wife
Elsie Pokorny Barton ministered to congregations of the Unity of the Brethren
Moravian church in South-central Texas for over fifty years.
The collection contains personal and
congregational records of Joseph Barton and his wife Albina Mikulencak Barton,
as well as their son Josef A. Barton and his wife Elsie Pokorny Barton. The
collection also includes early Unity of the Brethren church records, including
records of Reverend Joseph Hegar. The collection documents the history of the
Unity of the Brethren church in South-central Texas from the late 1800s through
the twentieth century. The papers are organized into three main parts: Joseph
and Albina Mikulencak Barton, Josef A. and Elsie Pokorny Barton, and Unity of
the Brethren church records. The line between the personal papers of the Barton
family and the records of the congregations they served is easily blurred, and
many papers relating to the church can be found under the individual family
names. Fifteen inches of correspondence to Reverend Josef A. Barton and his
wife from soldiers in the congregation serving in World War II will be
restricted until 2010. Much of the collection is written in Czech, especially
the early church records and the papers of Joseph and Albina Mikulencak Barton.
