Biographical Note

James Benedict Hickey II was born in Oakdale, Pennsylvania in 1898. He worked in the oil industry from 1916 until 1953. He worked manual labor jobs in the industry in high school, attended Shawnee University, and then went to work for the Marlin Refining Company in Ponca, Oklahoma. In 1923, he moved to East St. Louis, Missouri to work for the Lubrite Refining Company. Lubrite merged with Socony-Vacuum Oil Company in 1929. By 1947, he was the Operating Division Superintendent. In 1948, Hickey was put in charge of the New England Division of Eastern Pipelines Division in Portland, Maine. He was married to Winifred Mayo and had at least two children, James (III) and Mary Ann.

Scope and Contents

The personal papers consist primarily of magazine and newspaper clippings about Hickey and his family along with notes from the family about his life and a photocopied portrait. The Eastern Pipeline materials are photographs of Hickey, his colleagues, and the Portland refinery, and a letter from D. E. Andrews (colleague) about the photos. The Lubrite materials contain photographs of Hickey, his colleagues, and the East St. Louis refinery and materials related to company dinner events.
