Barry (1821-1906) was an Indian fighter,
sheriff, soldier, Texas Ranger, legislator, and People's Party candidate for
state treasurer (1898), and participated in military and law-enforcement
activities in defense of the frontier against Indian attack. During the Civil
War (1861-1865) he organized a company to take the frontier posts from Federal
garrisons and, after being promoted to lieutenant colonel, commanded Fort
Belknap and Camp Cooper in north-central Texas.
