Biographical Note

Edward Christian Henry Bantel (1873-1965) earned the degree of Civil Engineer from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute of Troy, New York, the first civilian engineering school in the United States, in 1897. He served as the supervisor of track in the Southern Division of the Mexican National and superintendent of railroads of the Cambia Steel Company of Johnstown, Pennsylvania, before becoming the second member of the engineering faculty at the University of Texas at Austin in the fall of 1901. He rose through the ranks to Professor in 1913, at which time he was also made Assistant Dean, the first in the College of Engineering. Upon reaching the age of 70 in 1943, Bantel relinquished his administrative responsibilities, but continued to teach courses in Sanitary Engineering. He retired in 1951, becoming Assistant Dean Emeritus of the College of Engineering of The University of Texas. He died at the age of 91 in Austin on April 3, 1965.

Scope and Contents

The E. C. H. Bantel Papers, 1893-1962, include correspondence, speeches, class notebooks, contracts, account books, an Engineer's ledger, certificates, scrapbooks, photographs, and audio recordings, and pertain to his career at The University of Texas at Austin as well as his membership and service in the American Society of Civil Engineers. Letters from ex-students and faculty members honoring Bantel on his retirement, as well as a guest list and lantern slides produced for the retirement party, are included. The papers also contain phonograph records with recordings of Bantel's life and a panoramic photograph of the Texas vs. Texas A & M football game on Thanksgiving of 1928..
