		<head>Scope and Contents</head><p>As a prominent newspaper editor and
		  presidential candidate in 1872, Horace Greeley is best remembered for his
		  famous statement “Go West, young man.” In this letter he discusses the changing
		  political climate in the South in the years leading up to the Civil War, most
		  specifically issues of slavery and the annexation of Texas. Greeley writes to
		  V.H. Hewes about the political situation surrounding the war with Mexico, the
		  nomination of Millard Fillmore, and the rivalry between Henry Clay and Daniel
		  Webster.</p>
