Biographical Note

Bailey, a native of Houston, was educated at Dean Academy and Phillips Exeter Academy and entered the University of Texas in 1889 where he lived in B. Hall. He received his B.A. degree in 1891 and went then to Munich, Germany, where he received his Ph.D. in organic chemistry in 1897. Later he worked in London and Aachen before returning to the University of Texas where he remained for the rest of his life. He became a full professor in 1911 and preferred his academic life to the lucrative jobs that were offered to him by private companies and institutions.

Papers contain correspondence concerning both the chemical research by Bailey, University of Texas professor of chemistry, dealing primarily with petroleum, and his relationship with other chemists and laboratories and with his students. Included are transcripts of articles, speech, the report of a referee of an article, and notices, as well as biographical material and bibliographies prepared for the University of Texas.
