	 <head>Biographical Note</head><p>Henry Austin came to Texas at the urging
		of his cousin, Stephen F. Austin. In 1831 the Mexican government approved
		Austin’s application for land and he began a plantation, Boliver, on the Brazos
		River. The plantation was never profitable, but Austin remained in Texas as a
		faithful supporter of his cousin and as a lawyer.</p>

	 <head>Scope and Contents</head><p>Papers of Henry Austin (1782-1853) and
		members of his family concern the Austin family, the colonization of Texas, and
		the governmental and political affairs of the republic of Texas. Included are
		letters, legal documents, historical sketches, maps and a broadside. Letters
		(1831-1839) to Mary Austin Holley are original manuscripts; other material
		consists of transcripts and Photostats.</p>
