several large programs initiated by the University of Texas
Libraries.
Biographical NoteHarold W. Billings joined the University
of Texas Libraries in 1954 as a library assistant and retired in 2003 after
serving as the director of the Libraries for 25 years. The American Library
Association honored him in 2002 for his “long commitment to innovation in
automation, resource sharing, and creative management” with the Hugh C.
Atkinson Memorial Award.
Scope and ContentsHarold W. Billings’ papers include
personal and official records documenting several large programs initiated by
the University of Texas Libraries. Two volumes relate to administrative aspects
of processing the approximately 1.2 million volume cataloging backlog, as well
as records regarding the establishment of the TexShare Program. Also included
are library purchase cards and order invoices for purchases relating to the
development of the Research Center (later the Harry Ransom Humanities Research
Center), the Undergraduate Library, the Latin American and Texas Collections,
and Main Library Collections.
