	 <head>Biographical Note</head><p>Archer Butler Hulbert, 1873-1933, was a
		historical geographer, writer, and professor of American history who studied
		American pioneer migrations and historic Western trails and roads. He published
		widely, and his major works include the sixteen-volume <emph
		render="italic">Historic Highways of America</emph> (1902-1905),
		<emph render="italic">Forty-Niners: The Chronicle of the California
		Trail</emph> (1931), and <emph render="italic">Overland to the Pacific
		</emph>(1932-1941). He also published original records and maps in facsimile,
		such as the <emph render="italic">Crown Collection of American Maps</emph>. Dr.
		Hulbert held professorships at his alma mater, Marietta College in Ohio, as
		well as at Colorado College and Clark University. </p>

	 <head>Scope and Contents</head><p>The Crown Collection of American Maps is
		composed of five series. Holdings at the Center for American History include
		Series II through Series V. Series II and III are unbound collotype
		photographic prints of original manuscript maps from the British Museum. The
		maps depict North American terrain, roads, waterways, settlements, and military
		constructions from 1615 to 1798. Maps in Series II document New York,
		Pennsylvania, Georgia, Lower Canada, Nova Scotia, Newfoundland, and other
		American locations. Series III contains maps of North America, Carolina,
		Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts Bay,
		New England, New Hampshire, and New York. Series IV and V are bound volumes of
		blueprints that depict American transcontinental trails and stagecoach routes.
		The bound volumes are located at the Center for American History’s Texas
		Collection Library.</p>
