Archer Butler Hulbert, 1873-1933, was a historical geographer, writer, and professor of American history who studied American pioneer migrations and historic Western trails and roads. He published widely, and his major works include the sixteen-volume Historic Highways of America (1902-1905), Forty-Niners: The Chronicle of the California Trail (1931), and Overland to the Pacific (1932-1941). He also published original records and maps in facsimile, such as the Crown Collection of American Maps. Dr. Hulbert held professorships at his alma mater, Marietta College in Ohio, as well as at Colorado College and Clark University.

Scope and Contents

The Crown Collection of American Maps is composed of five series. Holdings at the Center for American History include Series II through Series V. Series II and III are unbound collotype photographic prints of original manuscript maps from the British Museum. The maps depict North American terrain, roads, waterways, settlements, and military constructions from 1615 to 1798. Maps in Series II document New York, Pennsylvania, Georgia, Lower Canada, Nova Scotia, Newfoundland, and other American locations. Series III contains maps of North America, Carolina, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts Bay, New England, New Hampshire, and New York. Series IV and V are bound volumes of blueprints that depict American transcontinental trails and stagecoach routes. The bound volumes are located at the Center for American History’s Texas Collection Library.
