		<head>Biographical Note</head><p>Robert Harris Archer was a physician in
		  Maryland. He and his wife Mary Stump Archer had seven children, two of whom,
		  John and Stevenson, emigrated to Texas in 1846, along with John's wife Ann and
		  their eight children. John farmed and raised sheep in Texas, while Stevenson
		  became a surveyor in Texas and New Mexico, where he also acquired an interest
		  in a silver mine.</p>

		<head>Scope and Contents</head><p>Correspondence and genealogical
		  materials relate to the Robert H. Archer family. The bulk is letters from
		  family members in Texas to parents and siblings in Maryland, describing their
		  journey to the New Braunfels area, living and farming conditions in central and
		  south Texas, encounters with Indians, and surveying activities in Texas and New
		  Mexico.</p>
