A Guide to the Abraham Alley Family Papers, 1846-1886.
Biographical NoteAbraham Alley (1803-1862) was born in Missouri and traveled to Texas in 1822 and became a farmer in Stephen F. Austin's colony. He fought in campaigns against Native Americans and was a volunteer guard during the Texas Revolution. He went on to become a wealthy land and slave owner, marry Nancy Miller, and have 5 children. Alley relate to social affairs, health of family and friends, education of children, farming, land improvement and land rental, hiring of freedman, resentment of Reconstruction troops, return of local men from the Confederate Army, the Alley family business, slaves, and cotton.
