Biographical Note
Abraham Alley (1803-1862) was born in Missouri and traveled to Texas in 1822 and became a farmer in Stephen F. Austin's colony. He fought in campaigns against Native Americans and was a volunteer guard during the Texas Revolution. He went on to become a wealthy land and slave owner, marry Nancy Miller, and have 5 children.

Letters, financial papers, legal papers, and land papers of Caledonia Wright Clapp (1830-1870), tutor, Abraham Alley, Josephina Alley Wright and John R. Alley relate to social affairs, health of family and friends, education of children, farming, land improvement and land rental, hiring of freedman, resentment of Reconstruction troops, return of local men from the Confederate Army, the Alley family business, slaves, and cotton. Also included is information about John Bankhead Magruder's flight into Mexico.
