The Martin, Dunman, Haynes and Shelley
families lived in Alabama, Arkansas, Kentucky, and Texas throughout the
nineteenth and twentierth century. The Haynes family settled in Central Texas
in the Blanco and Marble Falls areas.
Personal correspondence of various
members of the Martin, Dunman, Haynes and Shelley families and their lives and
activities in Alabama, Arkansas, Kentucky, and Texas. Members of these families
were related through marriage, and their letters reflect the important domestic
events of the day, such as health of family members, crops, prices, cattle,
education, social life, Indian depredations, and the weather as well as larger
regional and national concerns and events such as the Civil War, the Texas
Rangers, and the range cattle industry. The bulk of the collection documents
the Elitha F. and James Martin family, particularly as it concerns their
children Sarah Annie, James, Susan, and George Martin in the 1870s in central
Texas, and the Charles Haynes family. Many of the genealogical documents are
photocopies or transcripts of original documents used to contstruct and
describe the family's history.
