Historical NoteThe Alabama Indians on the Alabama-Coushatta Indian Reservation are the holders of the original deeds. In 1854, largely because of the efforts of Sam Houston, the state of Texas purchased 1,280 acres of land for the Alabama Indians on which they and the Coushatta Indians, a closely related tribe, still live.
