Historical Note

The Alabama Indians on the Alabama-Coushatta Indian Reservation are the holders of the original deeds. In 1854, largely because of the efforts of Sam Houston, the state of Texas purchased 1,280 acres of land for the Alabama Indians on which they and the Coushatta Indians, a closely related tribe, still live.

Collection consists of photostats of three deeds registering the transfer of land by M.A. Hardin, M.R. Moore, and Samuel Rowe, through the state of Texas, to the Alabama Indians and one record of the legality of Rowe's purchase of his land at an estate sale.
