Biographical NoteJohn Coffee Hays (1817-1883) was employed by the Republic of Texas to make surveys on the frontier, became a captain as a Texas Ranger and Indian fighter, and was a colonel in the U.S. Army during the Mexican War. Hays went to California during the Gold Rush in 1849 where he served as sheriff of San Francisco County, became surveyor general of California, and was politically prominent.
