Biographical Note

The recipient of this letter, Henry
Morfit, acted as President Andrew Jackson's agent in Texas and reported
favorably on the state. However, both Morfit and Jackson agreed that any
recognition of Texas' independence should be delayed, and this became U.S.
policy. In this letter, Morfit's close friend William Gatewood compliments
Morfit's work in Texas: "I have read with much pleasure your valuable
correspondence in relation to Texas which has made a very favourable impression
respecting the chances which are afforded to an active and enterprising
man...."
