Atkins Jefferson McLemore (1857-1929) was born in Maury County, Tennessee and moved
to Texas in 1878. After a career in Corpus Christi, Austin, and Houston as a
journalist and newspaper editor, McLemore served as a Democrat in the Texas House of
Representatives from 1892 to 1896 and in the United States House of Representatives
from 1915 to 1919.

receipts, bills, broadsides, and photographs comprise the Atkins Jefferson McLemore
Papers, 1901-1933, documenting McLemore’s life and professional career.
Congressional records, correspondence from constituents and pressure groups, and
printed material concern McLemore's legislative career (1915-1919) and relate to
political issues of the day, as well as his work as a newspaper editor. Financial
