Biographical Note

George Henry Ragsdale was born in Knox County, Tennessee, in 1846. In 1867, he moved with his family to a farm outside Gainesville, Cook County, Texas, where he served as county surveyor during the 1870s. From the mid-1870s through 1894, Ragsdale pursued his career as an amateur field naturalist, publishing almost 100 articles and compiling significant data on the natural history of north-central Texas. He died in 1895.

Scope and Contents

The collection documents the professional career and personal life of Texas field naturalist George Henry Ragsdale (1846-1895). Included are Ragsdale's field notes on the fauna, flora, and geology of Cooke County, Texas (1878-1894); specimen notes documenting his collections of birds, birds' eggs, and other items (1876-1895); correspondence with scientific institutions and other field naturalists (1875-1894); and printed materials relating to Ragsdale's scientific pursuits and interests. Also included are manuscripts of numerous articles on subjects ranging from ornithology and geology to road building, education, and religion. Among these materials are notes and an article on Dr. Thomas Barrett and the hanging of forty men in Gainesville, Texas, in 1862. Ragsdale's notes on Indian raids in the Cooke County area are also included. Among the personal papers are two diaries: one records Ragsdale's view of events around Knoxville, Tennessee, during the closing years of the Civil War (1864-1865); the other primarily concerns his emotional and physical reaction to the death of his first wife Elizabeth in 1881 (1881-1883). Also included is correspondence from Kittie Reinhardt, who became Ragsdale's second wife in 1883.
