A Guide to the Virgil Barnes Papers
Dr. Virgil E. Barnes (1903-1998) served
as Geologist and Research Scientist, Associate Director, and Senior Research
Scientist at the University of Texas at Austin Bureau of Economic Geology
(BEG), as well as a faculty member in the University’s Department of Geological
Sciences. At the BEG he was Director of the Geologic Atlas of Texas and
Director of Tektite Research. Barnes was widely recognized as a worldwide
expert on the study of tektites, black glossy objects originally thought to be
meteorites but later proven to be of earthly origin. Barnes traveled the world
to find and study tektite samples.
Collection comprises the office files, scientific research files, and
supporting materials of Dr. Virgil E. Barnes, covering his entire professional
career from the 1920s through the 1990s.
