Detailed Description of the Collection

Congressional Activity Files, 1959-1998

  • The Congressional Activity files consist primarily of printed material and notes concerning special legislation and topics Gonzalez was involved in during his Congressional career. The files are organized into four series: Special topics, Committee on Banking, Finance and Urban Affairs, Subcommittee on Housing and Urban Development, and HBG files.
  • The Special topics files document specific events and legislation that Gonzalez participated in during his tenure in Congress. They are organized into nine sub-series: Civil Rights (1960–1993); Hemisfair (1962–1971); Model Cities Program, San Antonio (1967–1979); Select Committee on Assassinations (1963–1987); Savings and Loan/Banking Crisis (1986–1995); Gulf Crisis/Iraqgate (1990–1996); Whitewater (1994–1995); Texas Military Bases (1967–1998); and Mexican American issues (1962-1992).
  • The Committee on Banking, Finance and Urban Affairs and Subcommittee on Housing and Urban Development files include hearing information, legislation, correspondence and other material specifically related to Gonzalez’s activity on the two committees.
  • The HBG files are essentially subject files on topics of interest to Gonzalez and are arranged chronologically within three different sub-series: Topical files (1962–1998); Awards and Honors (1963–2001); Personal files.
