Calvin Littlejohn (1909-1993) was born in Arkansas but moved to the Fort
Worth Area in the 1930s and established his commercial photography studio there
in 1934. He continued his practice for nearly six decades, initially focusing
on the steady work to be found in documenting families, business
establishments, churches, schools, and the various cultural organizations
supporting the surrounding African-American community. World War II interrupted
his photographic work, as he served as an Army private at Fort Leonard Wood in
Missouri, but upon his return Littlejohn began expanding his scope to include
capturing recreation hall parties, speaking engagements, visiting celebrities,
and other everyday events which produced more candid photographs than his
studio portrait work, which he still maintained.
Though Littlejohn spent time as an accomplished gardener, civic
developer (in his attempts to revitalize Fort Worth’s Evans Avenue business
district), publisher, and inventor, the demands of his successful photography
studio, as well as occasional freelance photography for newspapers like the
Fort Worth Mind, Lake Como
Monitor, La Vida News, the
Fort Worth Press, and the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, occupied most of his time.
Littlejohn’s work provides a comprehensive portrait of the African-American
experience in Fort Worth and Tarrant County during segregation and beyond.
Return to the Table of Contents
Both black & white and color negatives, proofs, photographic prints,
mounted slides, correspondence, business records, and artifacts document the
life of African-Americans in Fort Worth and Tarrant County during the mid-20th
century as well as the post-war portion of Littlejohn’s career in photography.
Individual portraits comprise nearly half (30 linear ft.) of the archive, and
document Fort Worth’s history at a personal level. The other aspects of
Littlejohn’s commercial photography, which encompassed photographing weddings,
churches and church-sponsored occasions, parties, fashion shows, formal balls,
fundraisers, and other social gatherings, make up most of the remaining
archive.
The manuscript material illustrates Littlejohn’s business practices, his
extensive community involvement, as well as his family life. Littlejohn’s
friends and family are further represented in a series of photographs
maintained by the photographer separate from his commercial work.

Arrangement
|
| The Littlejohn archive’s arrangement reflects the photographer’s
business practices, separating his portrait-based business from his other
photographic services (which he labeled as “comm.” on the envelopes which held
and organized the photographs). These envelope-level descriptions, which
account for the bulk of this inventory, are taken from the Littlejohns’
(including his wife, Lucretia, or “Lou”) own writing on the envelope, and most
likely reflect the purchaser of the photographs, which is not always the same
as the subject of the photograph. |
| ARCHIVIST'S
NOTE:Where the Littlejohns’ handwriting was unclear on the envelopes,
the archivist has indicated his best conjecture with a [question mark in
brackets?]. A photocopy of the envelopes in question can be found next to the
image in the box. Additional descriptions added by the archivist, including
quantities indicated at the end of many entries, are also indicated by
brackets. The Littlejohn Studio, and the photographer’s family after his death,
provided all other descriptive content outside the brackets. |

After Calvin Littlejohn’s death in 1993, Lucretia Littlejohn donated the
archive’s materials to the University of Texas at Arlington Libraries, Special
Collections. In December 2001, most of the archive was physically transferred
to the Center for American History, and since then two more accessions have
arrived at the Center from Ron Abram, Littlejohn’s grandson and current
representative of the Littlejohn estate.
