	 <head>Historical Note</head><p>Stemming from the ill-fated Somervell
		expedition, about 300 Texans raided the Mexican village of Mier in December
		1842 and subsequently were defeated and imprisoned. The attack was not
		sanctioned by the Texan government or President Sam Houston. The prisoners
		attempted escape while being transported to Mexico City. As punishment, every
		10th man would be executed, and the condemned were selected by a random drawing
		of beans from a jar (later known as the Black Bean Episode).</p>
