A Guide to the Samuel Gideon Papers, 1908-1945
Born in Louisville, Kentucky in 1875, Samuel Edward Gideon's formal
education included the study of architecture at M.I.T. and Harvard, as well as
a degree from the School of Fine Arts (Fontainebleau, France). He taught at
Texas A&M and M.I.T. before becoming a professor at the University of Texas
in 1913. Gideon was an authority on early Texas architecture and worked to
preserve the home of writer William S. Porter (O. Henry) as a museum. He
remained active in numerous professional organizations and endeavors until his
death in Austin in 1945.
