Biographical Note

Richard Tudor Fleming was born on April 12, 1890, in Temple, Texas. He attended Temple High School and then entered the University of Texas. During his college career, he served as editor of the Cactus yearbook, was a pole-vaulter on the UT track team, and co-founded the underground newspaper Blunderbuss. Fleming earned a B. A. degree in 1912, his law degree in 1915, and began a successful law career in Houston. He served in the U.S. Army during World War I, and after returning to Houston became president of the Houston Bar Association and executive secretary of the State Democratic Executive Committee.

In 1928, Fleming moved to New York with his position as an attorney for the Texas Gulf Sulphur Company. He eventually served as secretary, vice president, and general counsel of the company until his 1961 retirement.

As a student at the University of Texas, Fleming began a lifetime of collecting a wide range of University-related material such as writings, photographs, music, and paintings. A special focus of his collection was books and articles written by ex-students and faculty of the University. He donated the diverse collection to the University in 1961, thus founding the Ex-Students Writings Collection. Fleming served as the unpaid curator and collector of these materials until his death in 1973. The University renamed the collection the Richard T. Fleming Library of Texas Writers in 1964.

Richard Fleming married Harriet H. Jameson on March 10, 1928, and the couple had one son. He died in Austin on March 12, 1973.

Scope and Contents

The UT Fleming (Richard T.) University Writings Collection Records, 1880-1980, are comprised of writings of former faculty members and students of the University of Texas, including both published works and manuscript materials. Additionally, correspondence, photographs, printed material, ephemera, clerical records, administrative records, and other materials concerning former UT staff, faculty, students, UT in general, fraternities, sororities, minority students, and a variety of other topics document the history, administration, and student and faculty life of the University of Texas.

Special records of note include yearbooks, commencement programs, and other printed material from the very early years of the University; minutes, documents, and proceedings of the UT Faculty Council, Faculty Senate, and University Council from the 1950s through the 1980s; a large amount of documentation on the First Officers Training Camp Association/Texas First Camp Men and other military history; and historical materials documenting service, honorary, student, and fraternal organizations at the University of Texas from its early years through most of the 20th century.

Individual collections of former UT students and faculty members donated over the course of the Collection’s history provide unique glimpses into both UT-related and other aspects of these persons’ lives. Original letters from President Woodrow Wilson to UT graduate and former regent on the board of UT Thomas Watt Gregory during his tenure as United States attorney general can be found, as can theses, dissertations, speeches, notes, literary productions, correspondence, and various other materials produced and collected by important UT alumni and faculty.

Photographs, along with notes, notebooks, and scrapbooks, can also be found in the collection. These materials have been arranged by donor where known, and provide unique glimpses into the history and inner workings of the University, its students, faculty, and staff.
