	 <head>Biographical Note</head><p>Juan Almonte (born May 15, 1803), Mexican
		diplomat and soldier, conducted an inspection tour of Texas in 1934 and later
		returned to Texas with Santa Anna in 1836, only to fall captive at the Battle
		of San Jacinto. He died in Paris on March 21, 1869.</p>

		Texas campaign from February 1 to April 16, 1836, derived from the journal of
		Almonte and published in the <emph render="italic">New York Herald</emph> April
		12 through July 1, 1836. Also included are: a retranslation of the journal into
		Spanish; notes on Almonte; a summary translation of Almonte's "Report on Texas,
		1834"; and a volume of letters, mostly in French, from Almonte to Maximilian
		and others (1862-1865) concerning Almonte's service as president of the Mexican
		Assembly of Notables and as envoy to France.</p>
