| Abstract | The Southwest Center for
Nursing History (SCNH) is the repository of three major statewide nursing
organizations in Texas: the Texas Nurses Association (TNA), the Texas League
for Nursing (TLN), and the Texas Occupational Health Nurses Association (TOHN).
The records contain information about the changing issues of concern to nurses
in Texas and as they relate to the parent organization. |

The Southwest Center for Nursing History (SCNH) is the repository of
three major statewide nursing organizations in Texas: the Texas Nurses
Association (TNA), the Texas League for Nursing (TLN), and the Texas
Occupational Health Nurses Association (TOHN). The TNA is the state branch of
the American Nurses Association, the organization that speaks for the nursing
profession in matters related to ethics, nursing practice, and nursing
standards of care. The records contain information about the changing issues of
concern to nurses in Texas and as they relate to the parent organization.
The TLN is the state branch of the National League for Nursing that
controls the educational standards and accreditation of nursing schools. The
records represent the changing concerns in nursing education.
The TOHN is
comprised of nurses working in industry, their concerns being quite different
from those in other work settings. The records reflect the evolution of the
role of the occupational health nurse.
In addition, the Center for
American History houses the records of many nurses who achieved national
prominence. Included are Dorothy Blume, who was on the cutting edge of the
nursing continuing education movement in the 1960s and 1970s; Marjorie Beyers,
who participated in the National Commission for the Study of Nursing; and
Billye Brown, who served as Dean of the University of Texas School of Nursing
for 20 years and significantly increased the national ranking of the
school.
