Historical Note

The Texas State Historical Association held its first meeting on Texas Independence Day in 1897. A constitution was adopted, giving the general objectives of the Association as the promotion of historical studies, particularly the discovery, collection, preservation and publication of historical material pertaining to Texas.

In July 1897 the Texas State Historical Association issued its first publication, the Quarterly (later Southwestern Historical Quarterly). Other publications of the Texas State Historical Association include the Handbook of Texas, the Junior Historian and many books.

The Association has also been dedicated to furthering education in the field of Texas history. Programs offered include the Junior Historians of Texas program, for students, and the Institute of Texas Studies seminar, for teachers.

In 1950 the Association moved its offices to quarters in the Eugene C. Barker Texas History Center, now the Dolph Briscoe Center for American History, on the campus of the University of Texas at Austin.
