In 1916, Florence Terry Griswold
assembled a group of San Antonio women to organize the Pan American Round Table
in order to foster communication and provide knowledge among different peoples
of the Americas. Round tables began appearing throughout Texas, with Austin and
El Paso begun in 1922, and the first outside of America appeared in Mexico City
in 1928. In 1944, an international body formed as the Alliance of Pan American
Round Tables in Mexico City to represent all the chapters. A presidential
proclamation established Pan American Day on April 14, 1931, and it is observed
by the Round Tables. Members also participate in educational projects and
fundraisers, at the state and local level.

Minutes, reports, constitutions,
awards, certificates, and scrapbooks (containing yearbooks, photographs,
printed ephemera, and newspaper clippings) document the activities of the Pan
American Round Table of Austin as well as its members. Activities include Pan
American Day, Spanish Coffee, and Children’s Art Day.
