Biographical Note

R.C. Hickman was born in the small East Texas town of Mineola, Texas, in 1922. During the Great Depression, the young R.C. moved with his father and brother to Dallas, Texas to earn money for his family. Hickman attended Austin's Tillotson College until the onset of World War II. His interest in photography developed during the war, and he soon earned credentials to become an official army photographer. After the war's end, he returned to Dallas and began a professional career as a photographer at the Dallas Star Post and completed freelance work for Jet magazine. Hickman also visually documented unequal school conditions for the NAACP, where his work often led him into dangerous conditions during the fight to end segregation. Hickman continues to reside in Dallas.

Scope and Contents

The R.C. Hickman Photographic Archive consists primarily of 4" x 5" negatives created during R.C. Hickman's professional career in Dallas with the Dallas Star Post and the Express. The archive also includes Hickman's freelance work for Jet magazine and photographs documenting school segregation for NACCP court cases. In addition to photographs of Dallas news events, also included are photographs of nationally popular entertainers and Dallas nightclubs, schools and universities, funerals, and notable Dallas citizens. The majority of the photographs were created during the 1950's, although some earlier and later materials are included in the archive. A small number of contact prints and exhibition prints are also included in the photographic archive.

Arrangement

In arranging this collection, the original order of the R.C. Hickman photographic archive was maintained; the complexity of the original labeling system precluded any further arrangement. The photographer's original subject headings and titles have also been retained. Subject headings with a large number of negatives include "news" or "news events," "entertainment," "clubs," "colleges," "schools," "funerals," and "people, places, and events." Other subject headings include time periods (e.g. "Summer 1952") and "unknown." Several of these subject headings repeat throughout the arrangement. The archivist added bracketed subject headings in cases where the original title was not descriptive of the folder's contents. Spelling and grammar reflect that on original negative group containers.
The Center for American History received the archive in seven accessions: 85-43; 90-135; 85-152; 85-260; 86-301; 87-214; 88-164. Numbering of the negatives is based on these accession numbers. Note that the original six-digit numbering system has been abbreviated to three digits. For example, negative 85-43-000001 is checklisted as 001. Consult the finding aid to locate the accession number of a particular image. Some entries include more than one negative. These negatives are listed as a, b, c, etc. Entries are marked with an asterisk (*) in cases where the original negative sleeve contained additional information supplied by the photographer.
Due to size, this inventory has been divided into two separate units which can be accessed by clicking on the highlighted text:
