Biographical Note

Ira Iscoe, PhD, ABPP, Professor
Emeritus, joined the University of Texas at Austin Department of Psychology
faculty in 1951, and was instrumental in developing the Clinical Training
Psychology Program and its accreditation by the American Psychology
Association. Born February 1, 1921 in New York City, Ira Iscoe was educated at
Sir George Williams College where he received his BA, and the University of
California at Los Angeles where he received his MA and PhD. Dr. Iscoe has
served on numerous committees and received several awards for his work in
psychology and mental health. Significant to the University of Texas at Austin,
Dr. Iscoe was an invited consultant to the committee, appointed by Governor
John B. Connally, to investigate the Charles Whitman UT tower sniper shootings
of August 1, 1966. The recommendations of the committee produced changes in how
the university handled the tragedy's social implications. Dr. Iscoe was also
part of the University of Texas Sutherland Committee (1966-67), which made
broad recommendations concerning counseling throughout the University of Texas
System, especially the use of 24-hour telephone counseling. Dr. Iscoe is active
as a pro bono consultant to a number of community and state agencies and serves
as a mentor to faculty members.
