Biographical Note

Dirck Halstead, award-winning photojournalist, freelance photographer, digital journalism pioneer and university instructor, had his first story published in Life magazine at only 17 years of age. Halstead's coverage of the Guatemalan revolution of 1954 marked the beginning of a career that would find him covering major world events throughout the late twentieth century, including the fall of Saigon towards the end of U. S. involvement in the Vietnam War, President Richard Nixon's trip to China, and the assassination attempt on President Ronald Reagan. In 1976, the Overseas Press Club awarded him the Robert Capa Gold Medal for his coverage of the Vietnam War, and in 2003, he received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the White House News Photographers Association.

After a stint as roaming photographer for the Department of the Army [ca. 1954-56], Halstead went to work with Black Star for a brief period before joining the staff at United Press International (UPI) in 1956. During this period he relocated several Times, and was based at UPI bureaus in Dallas, Philadelphia, and Washington DC. In 1965, he opened the first UPI picture bureau in Saigon to facilitate coverage of the Vietnam War. He left UPI in 1971, and began working for Time Magazine in 1972.

Halstead worked for Time Magazine from 1972-2001. During his tenure at Time, he covered the Ford, Carter, Reagan, Bush (George H. W.), and Clinton administrations, and was appointed Senior White House Photographer. He shot 54 of their covers between 1972 and 2001, distinguishing himself as the photographer with the most Time covers to his name. In addition, he became a much sought after freelance photographer for major motion picture companies and corporations.

In the late 1990s, Halstead began exploring the role of digital media (moving and still images) in capturing news stories for electronic publication. He launched The Digital Journalist in 1997, providing photojournalists with a forum for discussing and exhibiting their work. He also teaches Platypus workshops, where photojournalists and others learn the skills necessary to create their own documentary videos. Halstead is currently a fellow at the Center for American History.

Scope and Contents

The Dirck Halstead Photographic Archive consists of over 500,000 photographic images in various formats, including prints (color and black & white), mounted prints (color and black & white), laminated prints, contact sheets (color and black & white), transparencies (including 35mm slides), internegatives (4"x5" and 8"x10"), 35mm negatives, 120mm negatives, correspondence, printed materials, creative works, business records, and artifacts. These images are largely in transparent format and are available for research by appointment only.

The photographic material covers Halstead's work from the 1950s through 2001 and includes subject matter such as world events, topical news stories, famous personalities, and the United States presidencies from Kennedy to Clinton. The personal papers include presidential trip itineraries, magazines (and magazine covers), and assignment materials related to his work with United Press International (UPI) and Time Magazine. The artifacts include press passes and awards.

The arrangement and description of this portion of the Dirck Halstead Photographic Archive was a complex undertaking due to its size, the wide variety of materials included, and the lack of consistent labeling on the materials. Additionally, subject matter was repeated throughout this portion of the collection, but often had different designations, or was grouped in different ways, making consistent description a challenge. Of particular note are the following format issues.

Photographic prints are grouped by size and arranged chronologically. Mounted prints are listed individually, in all sizes. Unmounted prints are listed by subject, with dates when available.

The description of the 4"x5" internegatives constitutes a large portion of the finding aid. When the internegatives were found in groups and numbered (such as those of Nixon in Hyden, Kentucky, 1978), the internegatives were also numbered in the finding aid accordingly (Arabic numbers were maintained here). When internegatives were found in groups and contained similar subject matter, but had not been numbered, Roman numerals were used to designate these internegatives (such as the fan photographs in the "Pleasures of Asia" series, 1980). Many of the black and white 35mm negatives were labeled only with Time assignment numbers and not by any discernable subject matter or date. Subject information has been included in brackets ([ ]) when identified by the archivist.

The checklist inventory at the end of the finding aid (printed materials, papers, correspondence, notes, and creative works) includes file and envelope names provided mostly by the photographer with a few by the archivist. Some book and magazine titles are included as well. The materials reflect all aspects of the photographer's life.

Slides are not listed on this finding aid, but are included in a searchable database available online at http://www.cah.utexas.edu/db/halstead/

Asterisks indicate items that are considered by the photographer to be select materials within the collection.
