Historical Note

The Presidential Election Study, a research project of the Lyndon B. Johnson School of Public Affairs of The University of Texas at Austin, was conducted from 1989-1992, to analyze campaign organizations, issues, personalities, events, and finances, as well as voting and polling results in primaries, caucuses, conventions, and the general election, and the impact of party rules on the nominating process. Michael L. Gillette directed the project with a bipartisan Advisory Committee.


Scope and Contents

Interviews, newspaper clippings, printed materials, correspondence, literary productions, videocassettes, memoranda, lists, audiocassettes, and computer discs document the United States presidential campaign and election of 1988. Consists of 413 interviews of 268 campaign staff members, journalists, and candidates about the various campaigns; relevant newspaper clippings, magazine articles, and newsletters; as well as videotapes of televison news reports, political advertisements, interviews, debates, and convention activities.

Arranged alphabetically and chronologically by type of material.

Restrictions

Access Restrictions

Videocassettes may have copyright restrictions. Interview audio tape transcriptions on computer disc, and correspondence with interviewees are closed for fifty years. Some interview transcripts are closed to researchers due to restrictions placed by interviewees.
