Biographical Note

Syndicated columnist, author, and lecturer on Texas Legislature and politics, United States government, politics, and social issues, Ivins was born Mary Tyler Ivins, 1944, Monterrey, California, to Margaret and James E. Ivins, and grew up in Houston. She earned a B.A. degree in history from Smith College (1966) and an M.A. degree in journalism, Columbia University (1967), and then worked as a reporter for the Houston Chronicle (1967), Minneapolis Tribune (1967-1970), New York Times (1976-1977), and the New York Times Rocky Mountain Bureau (1977-1980). She was co-editor of the Texas Observer (1971-1976); columnist for the Dallas Times Herald (1982-1991), Fort Worth Star- Telegram (from 1992), The Progressive, and Ms.; and contributor to radio and television; and author of articles in numerous magazines and of books. In 1990 Liz Faulk became Ivins' personal assistant. Ivins has resided in Austin, Texas, since 1982.

Scope and Contents

Correspondence, literary productions, printed material, legal documents, photographs, sound recordings, video productions, and other items document Ivins' journalistic career and personal life. Bulk of professional correspondence reflects public response to Ivins' writings concerning abortion, gays in the military, gun control, First Amendment rights, health care, Waco Branch Davidians, Persian Gulf War, and other topics. Printed material subseries contains programs and invitations for events in which Ivins participated. Literary productions subseries contains some articles (1968-1982) and Ivins' columns from the Dallas Times Herald, Fort Worth Star-Telegram, Progressive, and Ms., as well as drafts and proofs of her books. A group of research files is organized alphabetically by subject. Correspondence and legal documents relate to a lawsuit against Ivins and Ronnie Dugger by Texas evangelist Lester Roloff. Bulk of personal papers is correspondence with family and friends and school records. John Henry Faulk's relationship as mentor to Ivins is documented in the correspondence and in his oral autobiography.
