Biographical Note

The Cartwright family arrived in Texas in the spring of 1820. They settled in what is now San Augustine County in East Texas. The Cartwrights began to acquire land holdings during the Republic era and continued to purchase land throughout the nineteenth century. In addition they conducted business operations in San Augustine, including cotton plantations, livestock, and agriculture.

Prominent in the collection is Leonidas Cartwright, Sr. (1842-1922). Leonidas was educated in San Augustine and the Bastrop Military Institute, and served in the Confederate Army as a member of Company E, 3rd Regiment, Texas Cavalry. He married Lucilla "Ludie" Ingram (184?-1908) in 1868, and together they raised nine children. Leonidas gradually assumed the role of family patriarch following the death of his father, Matthew, in 1870.

Scope and Contents

Correspondence, legal and financial documents, surveys, printed material, and scrapbooks document the Cartwright family's personal, real estate, agricultural, and mercantile endeavors. The personal family papers primarily involve the immediate family of Leonidas Cartwright, Sr., with considerable correspondence between family members dating from 1884 to 1916. Particularly notable are correspondence between Leonidas Cartwright, Sr., and his wife Lucilla from 1867 to 1908, and Civil War era correspondence. The general business records contain correspondence or accounts involving numerous different business activities. Included are real estate and tax records dating mostly from 1884 to 1924 and encompassing 61 Texas counties. Farm and ranch records include general, labor, sharecropping, livestock, and farm products. Cotton records (receipts for the storage and ginning of cotton), dating primarily from 1912 to 1920, comprise a significant portion of the collection.
