Scope and Contents

Records document the history of the School mathematics Study Group (SMSG). The records, which document the writing, implementation, and evaluation of the SMSG curriculum, consist largely of the files of the director, Edward G. Begle; together with a collection of SMSG textbooks and other publications. Records of the National Longitudinal Study of Mathematical Abilities (NLSMA) are also present. Material includes correspondence, meeting agendas and minutes, grant proposals, financial records, newsletters, drafts of publications, tests, and training films.

Forms part of the Archives of American Mathematics

Arrangement

The SMSG material was originally stored in the following locations. The materials have been transferred to standard archival boxes, but the original order has been maintained.:
  1. On the shelves:
    1. SMSG Textbooks and other SMSG Publications
    2. Hollinger boxes (1-40)*
    3. 1 box of 4×6 address cards*
    4. Filmed course for elementary school teachers (15 reels)
  2. In 7 filing cabinets*
