Biographical Note

The Texas Jewish Historical Society collects, preserves, publishes, and disseminates materials having relevance to the settlement and history of Jews in Texas and thier participation in its social, economic, religious, political, professional, and cultural growth. Established in 1980, the society was created as a response to an open letter by Rabbi Jimmy Kessler of Galveston calling for a historical society to preserve the Texas Jewish Experience. With over 750 members, the society fosters interest in Jewish history by publishing a quarterly newsletter, contributing articles to the The Handbook of Texas, and sponsoring awards for essats written for the Texas State Historical Commission. The TJHS also contributed to Shalom Y'all - The Jewish Experience in Texas and published the book Deep in the Heart: Lives and Legends of Texas Jews.

Scope and Contents

The Texas Jewish Historical Society Records document the mission of the organization to collect, publish, and preserve Jewish history in all areas of Texas and Texas life. The collection is arranged into sixteen series: Administration; family history; people by occupation; communities; Texas State Jewish organizations; religion/rabis and cantors; religious congregations; cemetaries; photographic material; audio, video and film; sheet music; Faye Brachman papers; Howard Lackman files; Rabi Levi Olan sermons; and Assorted files. The administration series contains the administrative records of the Texas Jewish Historical Society, and includes a substantial amount of material from the 1990 TJHS publication, Deep In the Heart: Lives and Legends of Texas Jews, by Ruthe Weingarten and Cathy Schechter. Materials relating to Family History, People by Occupation, Communities, Texas State Jewish Organizations, Religion/Rabbis and Cantors, Religious Congregations can also be found in the project files of the Administration series.
