Biographical Note

Beside his concerns as a planter and family man, William Massie served a term in the Virginia legislature and also gave financial support to Cyrus Hall McCormick when he was attempting to construct his reaper.

Scope and Contents

Papers detail life on the four Virginia Piedmont plantations owned and operated by William Massie (1795-1862) and also contain earlier family records of Massie's father, who served in the American Revolution, and later records of his descendants. Included is information concerning mercantile transactions, road building, current events, agricultural advances such as new farming machines and rotation of crops, the grinding of grain, and making of whiskey as well as precise data on the slave population. In addition the collection contains the papers of three men not closely associated with the family, one of whom, Matthew Bryan, ran an ironworks in Rockbridge County, Virginia.
