Born in England, Greene joined two brothers in the United States in 1893 to learn mining and ranching in Utah and Montana, obtaining citizenship in 1917. Based in New York City, Greene was involved in tungsten, silver, and gold mining, participated in a timber consortium in Mexico, and took part in oil exploration in Kansas, Oklahoma, and Mexico prior to World War I and later in Texas and other states. He eventually settled in Medina County, Texas, where in 1924 he purchased 1,000 acres of pecan orchard lands on which at various times he grew pecans and other crops, and raised Brahman and dairy cattle and sheep. He was also involved in real estate and land management in Medina County and in the San Antonio area.
