A Guide to the James E. "Monk" Vance Photograph
Collection, 1949-1985.
James E. "Monk" Vance, longtime Texas
agricultural writer and photographer, was born in Iola, Texas, in 1918 and was
raised in Bryan, Texas. Vance graduated from Texas A&M University with a BS
in agriculture in 1941, and served in the U.S. Air Force from 1941 to 1946. He
went to work for the Texas Agricultural Extension Service in 1946, and left in
1949 to become the farm and ranch editor at the Beaumont Enterprise. Vance
returned to Texas A&M in 1954 as the assistant editor for the Agricultural
Information Office. In 1959 he became agriculture editor of the Fort Worth
Star-Telegram. Vance returned once more to Texas A&M in 1978 as assistant
editor for the Texas Agricultural Experiment Station. He retired in 1982, but
continued to write for the Bryan-College Station Press until his death on March
16, 1987.

Photographic subjects include ranching,
farming, agricultural and veterinary science, livestock, and people of Texas
who were involved in these activities. Special focus is on two of the
photographer's employers, Texas A&M University and the Texas Agricultural
Extension Service. Also pictured are politicians active in rural Texas affairs
from the 1950s to the 1980s. A series of photographs documents western artist
Peter Hurd at work.

Arrangement |
|
Negatives are arranged chronologically. Prints
are generally arranged alphabetically by subject, and then by format. |
|
Photographic prints in this collection are identified at item level
with the exception of unmounted 8"×10" photographs, for which only folder level
control exists. The colloquial language used in the photograph titles is
derived from original titles and captions assigned by James E. "Monk" Vance.
Corresponding vintage negatives exist for many of the photographic prints in
the collection. However, the vintage negative date and photographic print date
for the same image often are not the same. In addition, multiple copies of the
same photographic print may have different dates. That is why a single title in
the inventory may be followed by multiple dates. |
