Papers of genealogist
Price (1900-1983) consist of two main groups: research materials related to
Texas outlaw, William Preston Longley. (1851-1878), and those related to
Price's genealogical research of the Price, Dunn, and Clift families. Longley
materials include correspondence, printed materials, muster rolls, research
notes, biographical materials about his father McCampbell Longley (1816-1907),
and genealogical materials on Longley's descendants in the Longley-Shaw family.
Additional materials relate to Alexander Calvit, John Salmon "Rip" Ford, Mary

Lucie Clift Price: Lucie Clift Price was
born in Davis, Oklahoma (then Indian Territory) on 27 August 1900, the elder
child of William Henry Clift (1871-1935) and Ellen Dunn Clift (1876-1907). Both
parents had originally been teachers, and had met in 1895 in Pottsboro, Texas,
where Will Clift had been principal and Maggie Dunn taught elocution at the
local school. The story of their romance is documented in a series of letters
exchanged in 1896 and 1897 which were published by their daughter as
Monuments of the Past: Letters of Maggie Dunn and
William Henry Clift (Austin: Privately printed, 1976).
Not long after their marriage in 1897 both parents discontinued
teaching and moved to Oklahoma, where Will Clift began a career in business. A
second child, Charles Henry Clift (1903-1977) was born near Hastings, Oklahoma.
After the death of Maggie Clift at Hastings in 1907, Lucie Clift lived with her
maternal grandparents in Austin, Texas, where she graduated from high school.
After attending a girl's finishing school, Martha Washington College, in
Abingdon, Virginia, Lucie Clift returned to Austin for two years at the
University of Texas before transferring to the University of Missouri at
Columbia, where she received a B.A. degree in 1922.
On 2 June 1923, Lucie Clift married Pinckney Bryan Price (1898-1965),
a highway engineer, in Sulphur Springs, Texas. They lived in Bonham and in
other towns to which his business took him. They had three children: Pinckney
Clift Price, born in 1924 in Bonham, Texas; William Henry Price, born at Paris,
Texas in 1927; and Nancy Ellen Price, born in 1930 at Fort Smith, Arkansas.
In 1940, Lucie and Pinckney Price were divorced (they remarried in
1963) and she began a more than twenty-year period of employment in state
government in Austin. Except for a brief period after her remarriage to
Pinckney Price, when they lived in Little Rock, Arkansas, Lucie Price lived in
Austin until her death there on 9 September 1983. In 1945, the first of Lucie
Price's children married; in the decade that followed, her two other children
married, and the first four of her ten grandchildren were born. It was perhaps
not coincidental that her interest in family ancestry intensified at this time
and that she had somewhat more leisure to pursue that interest. What began as
an interest became a full-fledged occupation.
In the course of investigating her own family's ancestry, Lucie Price
developed very considerable skills as a genealogical researcher, becoming an
historian as well as a genealogist in the process. This development is well
documented in her family genealogical papers. Lucie Price's genealogical
interests extended well beyond her own ancestry. In the decades following her
initial genealogical researches, she became an active, well-known, as well as
out-spoken, figure involved in many genealogical interests and causes. She
corresponded with hundreds of persons in almost every state and was active in a
variety of genealogical projects, compiling for instance
Travis County, Texas Marriage Records 1840-1882
(Austin: Privately printed, 1973) and assembling research materials on Bill
Longley, an early Texas desperado. Neither the book on Travis County marriages
nor the Longley research materials are included in this collection, though the
Longley materials are also held by the Dolph Briscoe Center for American History. The Lucie
Price Genealogical Papers comprise only the research materials she assembled in
tracing her own family's ancestry through three primary family lines: Clift
(her father), Dunn (her mother), and Price (her husband). She produced a book
on a Dunn family line: Ballinger: Richard, Joseph,
John Logan of Virginia, Kentucky, Texas (Austin: Privately printed, ca.
1970). A book on the Price family, Price Family
Recollections, incomplete at the time of her death, is being
posthumously published by her family.
William Preston Longley: William Preston
Longley, the outlaw known as "Wild Bill" Longley, was born in Texas on October
6, 1851. He murdered 32 individuals and committed other crimes in five Texas
counties as well as in Cheyenne, Wyoming Territory. He was hanged in Giddings,
Texas, on October 11, 1878, on a murder charge after escaping death in an
earlier hanging attempt.
Lucie Price expresses gratitude to Deolece Parmalee for help in
collecting the Longley materials.

Lucie Clift Price Genealogical Papers:The
family genealogical papers of Lucie Clift Price (1900-1983), Texas genealogist,
trace the ancestry of her father William Henry Clift, her mother Maggie Ellen
Dunn, and her husband Pinckney Bryan Price. The collection consists primarily
of correspondence and research materials created, generated, or assembled by
Mrs. Price from the early 1950s until shortly before her death in 1983. The
papers document the history of Lucie Price's family lines from their early
settlement in America in the late 17th and 18th centuries in the mid-Atlantic
and southern colonies and states through their 19th century emigration to
Texas. The bulk of the papers in the collection concern family lines in the
southern states in the late 18th and early 19th centuries and in Texas and
Oklahoma from the mid- and late 19th century to the early 20th century. Lucie
Price wrote or compiled three books dealing with her family (one published
posthumously) and contributed to another (The James
McMurry Dunn Family). Copies of the books are included in this
collection in part because, since these papers incorporate her research
materials for the books, the books themselves are extremely useful as a guide
to the scope and content of the papers. Although perhaps primarily of
genealogical interest, the Price papers have other research value, as well. The
papers are rich in materials--both correspondence and documentary--which reveal
cultural and social patterns of life typical of their place, period, and class
and should have some interest for the historian or sociologist. Of specialized
historical interest are materials relating to Joseph "Devil Joe" Ballinger of
Kentucky, and his activities in the late 18th and early 19th centuries in
association with Gen. James Wilkinson, who was tried for treason in 1811, and
Zebulon M. Pike, leader of the Pike Expedition of 1805 and 1806-1807. Other
areas of potential research interest are materials relating to southern and
western migration patterns typical of most Anglo settlers in 19th-century
Texas, and late 19th and early 20th century life in small-town Texas and
Oklahoma. In addition, the Price papers offer a well-documented example of the
growth and development of genealogical research in the third quarter of the
20th century; their value as a case study in genealogical methodology may
ultimately prove to be considerable. Lucie Price was hired in 1972 by
Englishman Richard A. A. Brownson of the English Westerners' Society to conduct
background research for a book he wanted to write on the life of William P.
Longley. The Lucie Clift Price papers were accumulated by Mrs. Price while she
researched William Preston Longley and his family. The actual papers were
collected from 1972 to 1982, but included among them are photocopies of
materials which date from 1838 to 1976. Collection dates reflect only original
material.
The correspondence primarily consists of letters between Brownson and
Mrs. Price. Also included are letters to and from Mrs. Price and the Longley
family, particularly Mrs. Dorothye Knight, Mrs. Susan Metcalf, and Mrs.
Janneyne Longley Gnacinski. The Longely family continued their correspondence
after Mr. Brownson terminated his, never having written his book on
Longley.
There are also letters between Mrs. Price and the research
institutions. Correspondence is arranged chronologically except that of the
Longley relatives which is alphabetized first by name and then ordered by
chronology.
The research materials collected by Mrs. Price are divided into three
categories: William Preston Longley, McCampbell Longley (William Longley's
father), and the Longley-Shaw family genealogical materials.
William Preston Longley: The William
Preston Longley materials consist of manuscript notes written by Mrs. Price and
photocopies of materials originally from the years 1868-1878. Many are longhand
transcriptions of letters Longley wrote while in the Giddings jail during
1877-1878. Other notes are about newspaper articles and biographical
information. A notebook contains genealogical data on the Longley-Shaw
relatives, 1850-1906. Adventures of Bill
Longley is a complete photocopy of the work by Henry Fuller written
sometime in the 1920s. Other printed materials on Longley are primarily
photocopied newspaper and magazine clippings. The trial records included in the
papers are about Longley's desertion from the 2nd U.S. Cavalry, Company B in
1873. The McCampbell Longley research materials include Longley's land grant
and obituary.
The genealogical material concerns the Longley and Shaw families and
consists of photocopies of the census rolls, clippings, and notes.
A family-produced magazine (vol. 1 #1-vol. 2 #4, 1972-1973) "Ancestral
Longley Family Tapestry" presents biographical and genealogical data on the
descendants of McCampbell Longley taken from census rolls, gravestones, and
vital statistics.
Mrs. Price helped arrange for a historical grave marker on Longley's
grave, and included in the collection is the documentation used for the
epitaph. The majority of the photographs included document the historical
marker dedication ceremony and the Giddings courthouse where Longley spent the
last two years of his life.
Research materials also include typescript notes concerning Alexander
Calvit's land grant in San Felipe de Austin in 1824 and biographical data on
John Salmon "Rip" Ford. Also included are photocopies of printed material about
settlers in Knox County, Ohio.
Oversized materials include the McCampbell deeds and land grants, U.S.
Cavalry 2nd Regiment, Company B, muster rolls, 1870 and 1872 (photocopies of
originals found at National Archives), as well as newspaper clippings from the
Giddings Times containing articles about
William Longley and a clipping from an unidentified Hempstead, Texas, newspaper
about the death of Mary Ann Peebles in 1862.
Collection also contains notes and correspondence related to
additional research projects concerning Chicago Haymarket anarchist Albert
Parsons, Robert Potter, and Erastus "Deaf" Smith. Of special note is a letter
to Price from Price Daniel regarding the origin of his name.

The Lucie Clift Price Genealogical Papers document her family history
in America from the late 17th century (in some lines) through the early 20th
century, that is, through the lifetimes of her parents and her husband's
parents and their siblings. The bulk of the materials covers the 18th and 19th
centuries. Lucie Price separated her own genealogical materials into three
discrete sub-groups, according to family group: (1) Clift, (2) Dunn, and (3)
Price. |
|
Although these basic subdivisions have been retained in arranging her
papers, the arrangement of the smaller units of the papers within the three
family sub-groups has been substantially altered or modified in order to impose
uniformity and to facilitate access for researchers who do not have the
intimate knowledge of the papers that their creator possessed. Lucie Price's
system or organization reflected her own (changing) needs; she grouped
materials variously by type, period, individual ancestor or ancestral line,
geographic location and so forth. The materials of each family group are now
arranged into two series, a correspondence series and a research materials
series. These two series reflect the two principal methods by which Lucie Price
gathered information, and while some overlapping is inevitable, this separation
of form and function provides a straightforward and consistent ordering of a
diverse mass of materials. |
|
Correspondence provided Lucie Price with one of her basic research
tools. From the early 1950s until her death in 1983 she corresponded widely,
and sometimes voluminously, with immediate family members (especially of her
parents' and her husband's parents' generation), with individuals sharing an
interest in a family name or line, with professional genealogists and
researchers, with archivists and librarians, with researchers and historians
whose work touched on some facet or individual of personal genealogical
interest, and with records centers of one kind or another throughout the
country. Many of these files constitute true correspondence and contain drafts
or copies of her letters as well as the replies she received; other files in
this series contain only letters to (or in a few cases, from) Lucie Price. |
|
Virtually all files in the correspondence series are arranged
alphabetically by correspondent and chronologically, front to back, within each
file, with undated correspondence and miscellaneous associated materials at the
end. Full names, including maiden names and alternate forms of names, have been
provided when possible, with the thought that patterns of family names would be
more readily apparent. Place of residence has been provided for further
identification and because location, coupled with family name, is frequently an
indication of the subject nature of the correspondence. An exception to the
foregoing is the arrangement by geographic location of correspondence that is
of an institutional, rather than a personal nature, for example requests to
archives or county clerks for copies of records. These are interfiled
alphabetically with personal correspondence, under location (i.e. state), with
an alphabetical arrangement within each location file according to city or
county, depending upon jurisdiction. |
|
While the correspondence files are normally restricted to
letters--handwritten or typed, original, carbon or photocopy--other
non-correspondence materials, such as copies of documents, clippings, or
photographs, are included if they were left attached to the letters by Lucie
Price. The inclusion of biographical materials pertaining to individual
correspondents--announcements of births and weddings, obituaries, letters of
condolence--also reflect Lucie Price's filing practices. Correspondence
not in the correspondence series includes
copies of family letters from earlier generations than Lucie Price's own; these
are filed with the appropriate family member or family line in the research
material series. |
|
The second series within each family group is distinguishable not only
because of its non-correspondence nature, but because, unlike the
correspondence, it is not unique. This group of materials has been organized
into a broad research materials series, and generally includes (1) photocopies
and transcripts of documents, most often obtained from public depositories, (2)
photocopies of printed books, either entire or in part, and (3) miscellaneous
notes, usually by Lucie Price and derived from her correspondence, reading, or
actual research. Also included in this series are photocopies of early family
correspondence, clippings and photographs not kept with correspondence, and
typescripts of drafts for her published books on her family along with the
books themselves. |
|
The documents, almost entirely photocopies and transcripts, are of the
following types: birth, marriage, and death records; deeds, mortgages, and
indentures; bonds; wills, estate inventories, and settlements; and pension,
bounty land, and military records. Photocopies of or from most instances it is
presumed that Lucie Price did not own or have ready access to the book or
pamphlet. (Lucie Price's own genealogical library is not included with this
collection.) |
|
Miscellaneous notes include family group sheets and individual family
histories; materials from family Bibles; copies of family ancestry filed with
applications for DAR membership; census notes; and, the largest bulk of
materials in the notes category, the various miscellaneous handwritten notes
comprising the raw materials from which Lucie Price derived her books, family
narratives, and ancestral charts. |
|
Individual descriptions of each of the three family lines, with
additional particulars of the materials within that family group, follow
below. |
|
Clift Family: The Clift family sub-group
traces the ancestry of Lucie Price's father, William Henry Clift (b. 1871,
Layfayette County, Arkansas--d. 1835, Kansas City, Missouri), son of Henry
Harrison Clift (1837-1913) and Nancy Ann Delila Pipkin Clift (1839-1903), and
includes information on the following family lines: Beasley, Clift, Moore(s) [a
family line which also appears in the Price family ancestry], Norwood, and
Pipkin. Most of the materials deal with the Clift and Pipkin lines and focus on
Maryland, Tennessee, North Carolina, Arkansas, Alabama, and Georgia. Included
in this sub-group is a copy of Lucie Clift Price's Monuments of the Past: Letters of Maggie Dunn and William
Henry Clift (Austin: Privately printed, 1976). |
|
Correspondence series: Included in this series are letters to and from
more than 260 correspondents. It occupies approximately 2 1/4 linear feet. The
most voluminous correspondence is with Lossie Morgan Clift Shumate, Lucie
Price's paternal aunt. Other voluminous correspondence includes that with Lucie
Price's brother, Charles Henry Clift, Marilyn Agnes, Harrell Zumwalt, Captain
Arthur Clifton Bushey, Jr., and Colonel William Philip Pipkin. |
|
Research material series: The files in this series occupy
approximately 1 1/4 linear feet and are arranged by record type within family
line. Included is a 20-year run of the Pipkin Family
Association Newsletter (1963-1983). |
|
Dunn Family: The Dunn family sub-group
traces the ancestry of Lucie Price's mother, Maggie Ellen Dunn (b. 1876,
Dennison, Texas--d. 1907, Hastings, Oklahoma), daughter of James McMurry Dunn
(1850-1928) and Mary Lucretia (Lucy) Ballinger Dunn (1850-1917). It includes
information on the following family lines: Ballinger, Dunn, Hocker, Jennings,
Logan, and Paxton, and focuses on New Jersey, Virginia, Maryland, Kentucky, and
Texas. Most of the materials deal with the Ballinger line, with the Logan and
Paxton lines next in quantity; this material formed the basis of Lucie Clift
Price's Ballinger: Richard, Joseph, John Logan of
Virginia, Kentucky, Texas (Austin: Privately printed, ca 1970). |
|
Correspondence series: Included in this series are letters to and from
more than 165 correspondents. It occupies approximately 1 3/4 linear feet. The
most voluminous correspondence is with William Edward Dunn, Lucie Price's
maternal uncle and author of The James McMurry Dunn
Family of Texas and Kentucky: The Migration of Their Ancestors from County
Derry, Northern Ireland to Pennsylvania Thence to the Province of Maryland, and
Their Futher Migration to Kentucky and Texas (Washington, D.C.:
Privately printed, 1960), a copy of which is included here. Other voluminous
exchanges of letters are with Zelma McMurtry, Colonel Buhl Moore, and Marie
Robinson. |
|
Research material series: The files in this series occupy
approximately 1 1/5 linear feet and are arranged by record type within family
lines. The bulk of these materials concern the Ballinger line, with emphasis on
Joseph ("Devis Joe") Ballinger and his brother, John. |
|
Price Family: The Price family sub-group
traces the ancestry of Lucie Price's husband, Pinckney Bryan Price (b. 1898,
Honey Grove, Texas--d.1965, Little Rock, Arkansas), son of Pinckney Moore Price
(1856-1939) and Sara Jane Bryan Price (1863-1960) and includes information on
the following family lines: Bryan, Jarman, Chiles, Meriwether, Moore(s) [a
family line which also appears in the Clift family ancestry], and Price. Most
of the materials deal with the Price line, with the Bryan and Jarman lines next
in quantity. The bulk of the material on the Price family dates from the 19th
century and focuses on Virginia, South Carolina, Tennessee, Alabama, Texas, and
California. These materials form the basis of a family history,
Price Family Recollections, by Lucie Clift
Price, published posthumously by her family in 1984, and included in this
subgroup. |
|
Correspondence series: Included in this series are letters to and from
more than 255 correspondents and occupies approximately 2 linear feet. The most
voluminous correspondence is with Josephine Martha Frost Spencer. Other
voluminous correspondence includes that with Dr. Earl Provine Price, Jr.,
Robert Daniel Hembree, Janie Price, and Leora J. Bishop. |
|
Research material series: The files in this series occupy
approximately 2 1/2 linear feet and are arranged by record type within family
line. |
