Biographical Note

Jonathan Edwards Pierce was born in Little Compton, Rhode Island, on December 6, 1839, the son of Jonathan D. and Hannah (Head) Pierce. He moved to Texas in 1860 and became a ranch worker in Indianola until joining the Confederate army, where he served from 1861 to 1865. He later joined brother Abel Head (Shanghai) Pierce in founding Rancho Grande in Matagorda County, Texas, and then the town of Blessing. He married Nannie Deborah Lacey, daughter of William Demetris Lacey, on May 2, 1868, and fathered four children with her. After Nannie's death, Pierce remarried twice and fathered two additional children. He died on March 29, 1915, and is buried near Hawley, Texas, in the Demings Bridge Cemetery.

Scope and Contents

Collection relating to the careers of Pierce (1839-1915), cattleman and land developer, and his son Abel B. Pierce (1875-1944) documents Pierce's ranching partnership with his brother Abel Head ("Shanghai") Pierce, his land holdings, and the development of his home Rancho Grande and the town of Blessing in Matagorda County. Included is a wealth of material on stock raising, agriculture (especially cotton and rice), irrigation and waterworks, banking, real estate development, oil leases, and hotel operations in Matagorda County. The collection also contains business records of William Carpenter and records of his estate, which was administered by Abel B. Pierce. Most of the collection dates between 1896 and 1944 with a few earlier land records. Materials include correspondence, ledgers, journals, daybooks, financial records, minutes of stockholders' meetings, record books, hotel registers, legal papers, land grants and deeds, plat maps, and photographs.
