Biographical Note

W.F. Eberlein (1917-1986) held positions at the Institute for Advanced Study (1947-1948), University of Wisconsin (1948-1955), Wayne State University (1955-1956), and the University of Rochester (1957-1986). His mathematical work, largely in analysis, included ergodic theory, mean value theorems, numerical integration, and functional and harmonic analysis. He also worked on models of space-time, relativity, and quantum theory, particularly internal symmetry and spinor analysis.

Scope and Contents

Collection documents the career of W.F. Eberlein through papers consisting largely of research notes and drafts of published and unpublished articles. The papers focus chiefly on functional analysis and mathematical physics, including quantum mechanics and relativity theory. Notes for Eberlein's teaching are included. There are course notes from Eberlein's education at the University of Wisconsin and Harvard University (1936-1942). Also included are correspondence, grant proposals, mimeographed lecture notes, and reprints.
