		Burnside problem and its relatives or finite geometries.</abstract>

	 <head>Biographical Note</head> 
	 <p>Richard Hubert Bruck (1914-1991) received his Ph.D. in mathematics from
		the University of Toronto in 1940 and continued his career as a professor at
		the University of Wisconsin-Madison, serving as advisor to 31 students. Bruck
		was a 1946-1947 Guggenheim Fellow of Mathematics and a 1963 Fulbright Lecturer
		in Canberra, Australia. In 1951 Bruck collaborated with H. J. Ryser to prove
		the Bruck-Ryser Theorem, now known as the Bruck-Ryser-Chowla Theorem, which is
		the only general nonexistence theorem for finite projective planes to date. He
		also introduced finite nets in 1951 and in 1956 was awarded the Mathematical
		Association of America’s Chauvenet Prize for his article entitled “Recent
		Advances in the foundations of Euclidean Plane Geometry,” which had been
		published the previous year in 
	 <title render="italic">American Mathematical Monthly</title>.</p>

	 <p>Branch files and research notes make up the bulk of this collection
		along with lecture notes, correspondence and publications. Papers in the
		collection primarily relate to the Burnside problem and its relatives along
		with finite geometries. Of note is the Luxembourg correspondence folder, which
		contains Bruck family history, written by Bruck, as well as Bruck’s listing
		included in 
	 <title render="italic">Who’s Who in America, 1968-1969</title>.</p>
