Biographical Note

Harry Forrest Annas (1897-1980) studied photography after World War I at Dad Lively's Southern School of Photography in McMinnville, Tennessee. After starting two studios in Iowa, Annas moved to Central Texas during the Great Depression. In 1933 he purchased a studio in Lockhart's town square; for the next forty years he was the town photographer for Lockhart and surrounding communities.

Annas's work has appeared in Barbara Norfleet's The Champion Pig: Great Moments in Everyday Life (Boston, 1980) and in Historic Texas: A Photographic Portrait (Austin, 1986). Before its donation to the Center for American History, Norfleet called the Annas photographic archive "one of the finest local history collections now in private hands."

Scope and Contents

The archive consists of Annas's professional work done in Texas, and ranges in date from the early 1930s through the late 1970s. While the majority of the archive consists of studio portraits, other images documenting small town life are also featured in the archive. These include rodeo queen candidates, Lockhart street scenes, Chamber of Commerce parades, pets, wedding groups, funerals, football games, high school groups, plays, United Fund workers, majorettes and marching bands, school graduations, building facades and interiors, soda fountains, copies of old family photographs, business dealerships, and many other subjects.

Most of the estimated 97,000 film negatives are black and white, though an estimated 6,000 color safety negatives are also present. Due to the wide time range covered by the Annas archive, it includes both nitrate- and acetate-based film. Proof prints exist for well over half of the film negatives; there are an estimated 78,000 black and white prints and 6,000 color prints in the archive. Color prints and negatives appear in the archive in materials dated after 1963.

Arrangement

The original order of the archive at the time of transfer from the Caldwell County Historical Commission has been maintained. Nearly one-third of the archive is arranged alphabetically in two groups for the years 1933-1947 (3Z1-3Z22) and 1933-1948 (3Z23-3Z24). Over half of the archive is arranged alphabetically by individual year (1947-1969; 3Z25-3Z26, 3Z27-3Z67). The last thirteen boxes within the archive (3Z68-3Z79) show little discernible order; this section of the archive is comprised of many various dates and formats of material. See the Annas holding record for a more comprehensive listing of the contents of these boxes.
ARCHIVIST'S NOTE: In 2005, a digitization project funded by a LERR UT System access grant was completed. 500 negatives from the Annas archive were scanned and are stored in a Center for American History database. Using the online finding aid, patrons may click the highlighted links next to the entries in the archive to view images scanned from that entry. To make an appointment to view other images from the archive, please contact the Photographs Archivist at peterson@mail.utexas.edu or (512) 495-4468.
Due to size, this inventory has been divided into two separate units which can be accessed by clicking on the highlighted text:
