Born in Tennessee in 1818, Reagan came to Texas in 1839. He was an
attorney, a judge, a militia officer, and a Texas legislator who served in both
houses of the United States Congress; in the Congress and as Postmaster-General
of the Confederacy; and as the first Railroad Commissioner of Texas.
Correspondence, legal documents, financial records, literary
productions, transcriptions of United States congressional records, and
newspaper clippings document the business and political careers of John H.
Reagan. Biographical materials include research notes of Benjamin Hervey Good
for a thesis, and a paper by Ruth White.
Records of Black Range Mining District; Bullion Gold and Silver
Company; Richard H. Hopper; Lockhart, Hopper Brothers and Company; and Asa
Barnaby; all in Territory of New Mexico; and of Sierra Land and Cattle Company,
of Territory of New Mexico and Kansas City, are included.
