Abstract |
Ray Ward was the
president of the International Association of Assembly Managers, an arena
manager and a consultant. Correspondence, minutes, printed material, financial
records, and course materials relate to the International Association of
Assembly Managers (IAAM) and the IAAM School for Public Facility Management.

Ray Ward was an arena manager, consultant, and the sixty-second
president of the International Association of Assembly Managers (IAAM). Ward
was elected and served as president of IAAM from 1988 to 1989. He was the first
and only president to graduate from the IAAM School for Public Facility
Management at Oglebay in Wheeling, West Virginia, which began in 1987. During
his time as president, Ward expanded IAAM's international involvement into
England. Ward served as an arena manager for the Oakland-Alameda County
Coliseum, also known as the McAfee coliseum, which opened in 1966. Drawing on
his arena management experience he joined with Thomas P. Parkinson, and William
Cunningham to consult for other arenas around the country.

Correspondence, minutes, course materials, financial records, subject
files, printed material, legal documentation, and a cassette tape document the
activities of and Ray Ward's involvement with the International Association of
Assembly Managers (IAAM) and the IAAM School for Public Facility Management.
Records are arranged in accordance with the organizational structure of the
IAAM. The Board of Directors series includes meeting files from annual meetings
and mid-winter meetings, including meeting agendas, minutes, and
correspondence. The Trustees series references the IAAM Foundation, which
"funds a variety of educational programs,
professional development efforts and research projects for public assembly
facility management professionals." The President series includes
correspondence sent and received by Ray Ward regarding IAAM matters, and the
Professional Touring Entertainment Industry Archives. Three councils are
represented including: Board of Education; Industry Affairs Council; and Life
Safety Council. The Board of Education focuses on professional development of
members, such as the The School for Public Facility Management subseries, which
includes curriculum material for the first and second class of each year,
except the first course in 1987, which only had one class. The school
"is an educational program to develop future
management personnel and to perpetuate a standardized curriculum/body of
knowledge to the Public Assembly Facility Management Industry." By
attending the school, members of IAAM can obtain continuing education credit.
The Director at Large series represents different types of assembly halls
including arenas, convention centers, exhibit halls, and stadiums. The survey
series includes methodology, correspondence, and results from survey conducted
by IAAM and other third parties. The industry profile survey was designed by
IAAM members to help facilities measure their performance. Public assembly
facility management material completes the remainder of the collection with
agreements, proposals, and brochures.
