| Scope and Contents of the Personal Papers |
| Records
relate to the personal life of Ann Richards before, during, and after holding
political office. Sub-series include general personal records, politics,
family, correspondence and activities. Political files contain articles,
mailings, and other printed material regarding political causes, issues, and/or
candidates that she supported or in which she found an interest. This series
also contains political office correspondence and publicity files, which
include speeches given, and other appearances made outside the realm of
campaigning. Family records relate to her childhood and family. The separate
personal correspondence series primarily contains letters that are strictly
personal and do not necessarily relate to her life as a public official of the
state. Post-gubernatorial records document Richards' activities after her term
as governor and consist mostly of speeches, invitations, and engagements. Types
of records are correspondence, newsclippings, articles, brochures, press
releases, and other printed material. Non-manuscript records such as artifacts,
books, photographs, and audio/visual material that are considered part of the
personal papers are separated into individual series following the campaign
