Ben and Henry Eustace McCulloch both served as Texas Rangers, Texas legislators, United States marshals, and as brigadier generals in the Confederate Army.

Scope and Contents

Papers of Ben McCulloch (1811-1862) and his brother, Henry Eustace McCulloch (1816-1895) include materials relating to their parents, Alexander McCulloch (1777-1846) and Francis F. (Lenoir) McCulloch (1780-1866) of Dyersburg, Tennessee, siblings and descendants. The McCulloch family series includes correspondence concerning family matters and reflects farm life and military, social and political events; genealogies of the McCulloch and Van Lear families; a family scrapbook; and materials concerning Henry's son, Captain Ben E. McCulloch. Ben McCulloch's papers consist of letters reflecting his activities as surveyor in Gonzales County (1837), state legislator (1846), Texas Ranger (1846-1848), gold miner and sheriff in Sacramento, California (1853-1856), peace commissioner to the Utah Territory (1858), brigadier general in the Confederate Army and commander at the Battle of Elkhorn where he died in 1862. Henry Eustace McCulloch's papers include letters, journals and military communications documenting his activities as sheriff of Gonzales County; surveyor and merchandiser in Gonzales and Seguin; tavern keeper in Austin (1859-1860); and officer in the Confederate Army (1861-1865). Included are rosters and accounts of McCulloch's volunteer companies (1846-1851) and documents of Henry's activities as superintendent of the Texas Institution for the Deaf and Dumb (1877-1879).
