Papers of Ben McCulloch (1811-1862) and his brother, Henry Eustace
McCulloch (1816-1895) include materials relating to their parents, Alexander
McCulloch (1777-1846) and Francis F. (Lenoir) McCulloch (1780-1866) of
Dyersburg, Tennessee, siblings and descendants. The McCulloch family series
includes correspondence concerning family matters and reflects farm life and
military, social and political events; genealogies of the McCulloch and Van
Lear families; a family scrapbook; and materials concerning Henry's son,
Captain Ben E. McCulloch. Ben McCulloch's papers consist of letters reflecting
his activities as surveyor in Gonzales County (1837), state legislator (1846),
Texas Ranger (1846-1848), gold miner and sheriff in Sacramento, California
(1853-1856), peace commissioner to the Utah Territory (1858), brigadier general
in the Confederate Army and commander at the Battle of Elkhorn where he died in
1862. Henry Eustace McCulloch's papers include letters, journals and military
communications documenting his activities as sheriff of Gonzales County;
surveyor and merchandiser in Gonzales and Seguin; tavern keeper in Austin
(1859-1860); and officer in the Confederate Army (1861-1865). Included are
rosters and accounts of McCulloch's volunteer companies (1846-1851) and
documents of Henry's activities as superintendent of the Texas Institution for
the Deaf and Dumb (1877-1879).
